The IB Core
Extended Essay (EE)
The Extended Essay (EE) is an opportunity for students to develop essential research and writing skills with the support of an EE Coordinatorand a teacher mentor to guide them through the process. Students are encouraged to select a topic of interest to them that also aligns with the course work they are studying in the Diploma Programme. Teacher supervisors with background in the chosen area of research assist students as they work over the course of 18 months to develop an essay of up to 4000 words. Class time is available for much of the process. The EE is a source of pride for our IB graduates.
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
CAS is known as the 鈥淗eart of IB鈥 for good reason: these are the activities that provide balance in your life. Over the course of the two-year Diploma Programme, students are supported by their CAS Coordinator as they work with classmates and community partners to complete projects and activities in the three areas: Creativity (drama, music, dance, painting, web design), Activity (workout program, sports teams, yoga) and Service (volunteering with a community partner). Students reflect on their experiences and set goals for improvement using ManageBac, an online platform. CAS is not assessed for marks but is required in order to earn an IB Diploma. In our experience, CAS reflections often make excellent additions to university and scholarship applications.
Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
This course takes place within students鈥 timetables and serves to explore the many ways of knowing. In this course, there is less emphasis on assessment and more on developing critical thinking skills, forming valid and persuasive arguments, considering issues from other perspectives, and learning about different types and sources of knowledge. There are only two IB assessments for this course: the TOK Exhibition and the TOK Essay. Students earn an Ontario Philosophy credit for this course (HZT4U).
